The art of zari traces its origin to the village named Zari in ancient Persia—modern-day Iran. Skilled artisans created delicate motifs on fine fabrics using threads made from real gold and silver. This exceptional craft travelled to India around 1700–1100 BC, and reached its artistic peak during the Mughal era, especially under the patronage of Emperor Akbar, when zari became a symbol of luxury, nobility, and cultural pride. Over time, the craft has evolved. Today, modern fashion embraces an innovative form called metallic zari, which has replaced traditional precious-metal threads in most applications. Metallic zari threads offer uniform flexibility, smoothness, ductility, durability, rust-resistance, and lighter weight, making them ideal for contemporary embroidery and large-scale production—while still retaining the classic grandeur of traditional zari.
